Hairy and Slug

Smashing group of stories for sixes to nines about Slug, the characterful little family car and Hairy, the lethargic dog, who always wants to get home in time for Coronation Street. The banter between the car and the dog, and the family's children and their parents is witty. This author has a way of catching the quirky details (the car's first trip to a car wash) and exploiting the imaginative potential, without every making the fun merely fey. My seven-year-old co-readers liked best the episode when Grandma get bandaged up to help with the first aid badge --- and went on the find the same writer's Allotment Lane School stories, also in Puffin.
