An attractive picture book about three princesses whose hearts are made out of glass. After one of them dies of a broken heart, and another becomes an invalid when her heart cracks, the third is prevented from marrying anybody who does not know everything about glass. Only the least likely candidate proves dedicated enough to go out into the world and to learn. This is a romantic and pleasing little flight of fancy with a tale within a tale structure. The delicate and detailed pictures set the story within a Venetian fantasy land of gardens and gondolas.
